In Tennessee, and across the country, times are tough. Practically every individual and family Crissy and I encounter on the campaign trail has been affected – either directly or through loved ones – by the massive job losses we have experienced during these difficult economic times. Since entering the race for governor nearly 20 months ago, I have been focused on making sure every Tennessean has the opportunity to obtain a high quality job.

Last week it was announced that Tennessee’s unemployment rate for July was down slightly from the previous month, and this week we learned that county unemployment rates decreased in 87 of the state’s 95 counties. While we have reason to be optimistic about our future and the direction our economy is headed, we must remember that with a state unemployment rate still approaching 10 percent and above the national average, as well as individual county unemployment rates reaching as high as 19.4 percent, there is much work to be done.

Our next governor can’t just talk about jobs. He must have a proven record of job creation and a plan to grow jobs in every corner of our state. I have focused my entire career on creating and recruiting jobs – 20 years in business and the past 6 ˝ as Mayor of Knoxville. I want to take this experience and use it to help make Tennessee the No. 1 state in the Southeast for high quality jobs.

Sincerely,
Bill

Dear Friends,

Tennessee’s education system stands at a crossroads. For years, our schools have consistenly ranked in the country's bottom 5, trailing the rest of the nation. However, recent developments, like Governor Bredesen’s Race to the Top victory, have poised Tennessee to take the lead in education and set an example for other states to follow. This past week, I spent some time in classrooms across the state learning how we can build on recent successes to develop new programs and improve existing initiatives.

On Monday, I visited a pre-K pilot program at Southwest Tennessee Community College in Shelby County. As the only candidate committed to supporting pre-K and increasing funding as revenue allows, I believe pre-K gives children the tools they need to succeed in education. The children enrolled in the pre-K pilot program at SWTCC had a thirst for learning that strengthened my conviction to expand pre-K as soon as the budget allows.

Later in the week, I traveled to Chattanooga where University of Tennessee – Chattanooga Chancellor Roger Brown took me on a tour of the campus. During my time at UTC, I learned how our state’s existing online educational resources can be leveraged to cost-efficiently improve the quality of education for Tennesseans statewide. Expanding broadband services to rural and urban Tennesseans would provide thousands of residents with access to quality educational services and improve their chances to find good paying jobs. As governor, increasing the availability of affordable broadband services would be one of my top educational priorities.

I also took the time to visit Tennessee Tech’s Millard Oakley STEM (Science, Techonology, Engineering, & Mathematics) Center, where they are discovering new ways and coordinating with schools and universities across the state to better educate Tennessee’s children. Over the past several decades, American students have fallen behind in science and mathematics. TTU’s STEM effort represents Tennessee’s commitment to preparing its students to compete for good jobs requiring extensive technical and mathematical skills.

If the next governor builds on the successes achieved by Governor Bredesen’s administration, he can turn Tennessee's educational system around and graduate classes of highly qualified, well-rounded students prepared to compete in an increasingly demanding job market.

Sincerley,
Mike McWherter

A Message From Bill
After an exciting week last week, this week marked the beginning of our general election campaign. To kick off this leg of the campaign we made several stops in each of the grand divisions to thank existing supporters and welcome new supporters to our team. Crissy and I are incredibly humbled by the outpouring of support we’ve received since becoming the Republican nominee. If you haven’t been able to come out to one of our events, we would love to meet you in person at an upcoming event!

Substantial Lead in New Poll, but No Time to Let Up
Tuesday, Rasmussen Reports released the latest results in their series of telephone surveys. 500 likely voters were surveyed and 56% chose Mayor Haslam to be Tennessee’s next governor while only 31% chose his opponent. We still have a lot of work to do before November, so let’s continue to work hard over the next couple of months. Tennessee deserves a governor with the right experience to lead our state through these tough times.

Knoxville leader who knows Zach Wamp and
Bill Haslam well says Zach is the clear choice.

Knoxville News Sentinel, July 18, 2010

Over the last 20 years, I've had the chance to get to know U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp very well, both during my time in the private sector, running my family's business, and during my time in public service, as the commissioner of economic development for Tennessee and as a director of the Tennessee Valley Authority, serving as its last full time chairman.

During these same years, I've also had the chance to get to know and work with Bill Haslam, the mayor of Knoxville.

I am proud to be a life-long Knoxvillian. My family's company has been headquartered here for 50 years. My wife, Ginger, and I grew up here, and we've raised all four of our children here.

So people all over the state ask me: "Why are you and your family supporting Zach Wamp, and not Bill Haslam, the mayor of your hometown, for governor?"

I am clear and firm in my answer:

Based on 20 years of experience, there is no comparison between Wamp and Haslam.

Quite simply, Wamp has the vision, the energy and the leadership abilities we need in our next governor, and Haslam does not.

And though Haslam is one of the nicest fellas you'd ever want to meet, the plain truth is that his record of performance, both in the private sector and in public office, does not measure up.

The leader we need is Zach Wamp.

I base this conclusion on three vital factors: Consistent, reliable conservative values and a philosophy of limited government, low taxes, free markets, and individual liberties; proven, accomplished leadership in the critical area of economic development - how to attract capital investment and create new jobs for our state; demonstrated commitment to truthfulness, transparency and full disclosure to the people whose trust he seeks to earn.

In all these areas, the mayor of Knoxville's tenure has been disappointing.

As soon as Bill Haslam was elected mayor, his very first order of business was to pass the largest property tax increase in our city's history. Not exactly a conservative's approach.

Many of us who had hoped he would bring his family's business acumen to his office were sorely disappointed.

In the critical area of economic development, during his six years as mayor Haslam's record is anemic. His "crown jewel" is a taxpayer subsidized movie theater downtown - a movie theater!

But perhaps raising the greatest concerns, as mayor Haslam has steadfastly refused to comply with decades of common practice in his financial disclosures, choosing instead to meet only the bare legal minimums, with the greatest possible vagueness and difficulty of public access.

We are seeing the same attitude now in his incomplete, customized financial disclosures as a candidate for the highest office in our state. He refuses to do what our last four governors have all done, both Republican and Democrat - Openly and completely disclose to the voters the sources and extent of his financial interests, so that the voters can determine if there are any conflicts.

But Bill Haslam refuses to do this.

That is not the kind of leadership we are looking for in our next governor.

My family and I are so strongly supporting Zach Wamp.

He is the right man, with the right values, and the right solutions for these tough times.

And that is why Zach Wamp will make us proud as Tennessee's next great governor!

Bill Baxter is chairman of Holston Gases Inc., former TVA chairman, former Tennessee Commissioner of Economic and Community Development and an active business, civic and charitable leader in Knoxville.

Basil Marceaux pleaded guilty to vandalism, theft and possession of drug paraphernalia; Usually innocent by reason of insanity

Letters of need for involuntary committal were issued, but it isn't clear that he was ever actually placed in a psychiatric hospital. In some ways, his scofflaw's disregard for vehicle registration and insurance laws makes him more Tea Party than any of the other candidates. He's thumbing his nose at Big Government.

A Message From Bill

It’s been an incredible two weeks on our Early Voting Tour! Crissy and I have been crisscrossing the state, spending time with so many wonderful Tennesseans. What a great state we have—with so many natural resources and full of talented yet humble people. We are all very blessed to live in this state and I truly believe our future is bright and our best days are yet to come. But our state needs the right leadership during this critical time and I humbly ask for your vote. Please exercise our great gift of democracy and vote.

I truly appreciate all that you have done to support my campaign.

Bill

P.S. Our “Statewide Door Knocking Day” is tomorrow and we would love to have you join us. Crissy and I will be out knocking on doors and we are organizing to do the same in communities across the state. Will you please take a couple of hours to help us? Please contact Nathan@BillHaslam.com for more information.
Primary Night Plans

With the Republican primary a little less than a week away, we thought it would be a good time to share the details of our primary night plans. On the evening of August 5th the Bill Haslam for Governor campaign will be at the Hilton in Downtown Nashville (121 4th Avenue South) starting at 7:00 p.m.. Rooms can be reserved by calling 615-620-1000. Hope to see you August 5th!
Right Experience. Right Choice.

Tennessee is a state blessed with an abundance of natural and human resources. And Tennessee needs proven conservative leadership during these tough times to ensure a return to prosperity.

Share your thoughts on the importance of conservative leadership via Facebook.
Online Poll Position

Over the past few weeks, Bill has not only led polls conducted by Nashville's NBC affiliate and Mason-Dixon, but also won quite a few online. One recent example was Bill's big win in the Nashville Business Journal's online poll. We tend to believe the spread is a little generous, but we like the result.

If you think Bill Haslam has the right experience to lead Tennessee, be sure to cast your ballot in the only poll that matters: the primary election on August 5th.

Dear Friends,

There are only two days left to vote in the primary. Early voting continues today and Saturday. Please go vote in the Democratic primary and urge your friends and family to do the same! Click here to contact your county election commission for voting times and locations.

During this campaign, I have had the opportunity to learn about the challenges facing Tennessee’s working families. Along our state’s back roads and interstate highways, I have assessed the needs of each community and developed a Tennessee First, Tennessee Jobs plan that will put Tennessee back to work by providing tax breaks to small businesses that create jobs.

Several months ago we launched the Mike Works! tour, and it has placed me shoulder to shoulder with some of the hardest working people I have ever met. I have built furniture, worked on assembly lines, installed air conditioning units and performed many other jobs along the way. This experience has given me the chance to walk a mile in another man’s shoes, to truly understand what’s on the hearts and minds of everyday Tennesseans. As governor, I will take the experiences from the campaign trail to the capital and will ensure Tennessee’s working families have a strong leader who will roll up his sleeves and go to work for them.

As we approach the August 5th primary, I wanted to remind you early voting will end on Saturday, July 31st.

I would also like to invite you to attend our Primary Night Celebration and Election Kick Off on Thursday, August 5th at 6:30 p.m. CST at LP Field in Downtown Nashville. The event is open to the public and will take place in the West Club level - free parking is available in lots S & H. For more information or to RSVP, please contact hollis@mikemcwherter.com.

Please remember to vote in the Democratic Primary and I hope you will join my celebration on August 5th!
